Prior to Israel's battles, we, the readers, are given a behind-the-scenes glimpse at the true leader of the conquest (Josh. 5:13-15). Joshua encounters "a man" standing with his sword drawn. This man identifies himself to Joshua as the "commander of the army of the LORD." In response, Joshua fell "facedown to the ground in reverence," apparently recognizing something of the real identity of his visitor. This meeting provided Joshua with assurance of God's presence as Israel embarked on her battles.
